Abstract:

The U.S. Department of Agriculture develops Area Sampling Frames ASFs for each state using a series of land-use maps, and utilizes them is selecting statistical samples for agricultural surveys. Recently, Landsat imagery provided up-to-date land-use information during construction of a new ASF for California. Multispectral Scanner false-color scenes were manually interpreted along with aerial photos, density of cultivation. Finally, these boundaries were digitized, forming a computerized ASF data base. Use of this ASF improved statistical efficiency with reduced sample size for California agricultural surveys. Author
