Stiffened plates are designed for minimum volume subject to constraints on Von Mises maximum stresses, nodal displacements, height to thickness ratios of frame webs, and width to thickness ratios of frame flanges. Design variables are plate thickness and stiffener dimensions. A finite element analysis program is developed for the design of stiffened plates using numerical optimization techniques. The program may be used as a stand alone analysis tool or may be coupled to an optimizer of users choice. Rectangular plate elements and frame elements are used for the idealization of stiffened plates. Design examples are presented to demonstrate the design method. Author
