Abstract:

The pendant drop method is used to determine the surface energy of epoxy resins and resin mixtures. Epon 828, a liquid bisphenol A-epichlorohydrin resin, affords a surface energy gamma of 42.89 or- 0.46 mNm sub 1 at 75 deg with a temperature coefficient of -0.111 mNm sub 1deg C. After heating, mixtures of Epon 828 and its higher molecular weight homologue, Epon 1007F, yield surface energies which gradually decrease with time. Surface energies of amine-Epon 828 adhesives are reported as a function of temperature, cure time, and resin concentration.
