Abstract:

A theory of adaptivity for numerical procedures is developed. The basic concept is that of a feedback system for a family of incompletely known problems. Then performance measures are introduced under which a system is defined to be adaptive if its performance is best in a specified sense for a particular class of problems and starting states. An adaptive quadrature example illustrates the concepts and applications to further classes of problems are discussed. Author
