Abstract:

The objective of the program was to explore a concept for a safe, reliable, general purpose, low cost, electronic, safing and arming SA system for use in projectiles, mortars, rockets, and other munition fuzes. Specific tasks included requirements definition, system analysis, and design, fabrication and testing of breadboard model hardware of the electronic SA device. The electronic SA device consists of an explosive barrier module EBM explosive barrier module EBM explosive train element based on a concept patented by HDL, environmental sensor elements, and an interconnecting processing electronics element. The electronic SA will remain safe prior to launch of the munition, thereafter it will sense the launch environments, delay the arming to safe separation from the launcher and sequentially energize the EBM to move the explosive train into the armed position. The resultant electronic SA is deemed to be a feasible approach to a general purpose method of safing and arming electronic fuzes of the future. However, much development work remains to be done to perfect various elements of the design.
