Abstract:

A prerequisite to effectively taking care of soldiers is the need to understand soldiers. This does not require a background in psychology or formal training in the complexities of motivational behavior. This does require, however, a complete openness on the part of the leader to become personally aware of the soldier, his background, his family, his likes, his dislikes, what he does in his free time, what he eats, what he doesnt eat, who his friends are and so forth. The more you understand about each individual soldier, the better able you are to provide for his welfare and thus enhance unit effectiveness.
