The Acousto-Photorefractive Effect in LiNbO3.

The acousto-photorefractive memory storage effect in lithium niobate crystal and its application to a memory correlator device were studied in a series of experiments. The effect is a semipermanent index of refraction variation in a LiNbO3 surface acoustic wave SAW substrate delay line produced by the interaction of a short, intense pulse of laser illumination and a SAW traveling down the length of the line. The experiments show that the storage is the result of an optical photorefractive effect and not, at least predominantly, a result of a direct interaction between an electric field associated with the acoustic wave and charge carriers.
