Abstract:

Infrasonics monitoring using a three-component borehole seismograph and surface microbarograph array show that within a frequency band extending between about 0.005 Hz to about 0.05-0.1 Hz, depending on local wind conditions, the infrasonic depth will be no worse than, and can be considerably better than, that observed on a microbarogram. Results lend credence to the hypothesis that, within this frequency band, infrasonic signals generated by sources in the low to moderate kiloton yield range can be seismically observed and can be positively identified without the aid of microbarometric data.
