Abstract:

From September 1976 to December 1978, extremely low frequency ELF field-strength and effective-noise measurements were taken aboard operational submarines. The results of measurements taken in Connecticut and aboard a submarine located under the ice in the Greenland Sea area during April 1977 are discussed. The principal result is that the average daytime and nighttime field strengths measured aboard the submarine are in excellent agreement with previous ELF measurements taken over similar paths. As expected, the presence of the ice cap had no adverse effect on ELF reception.
