Abstract:

The discipline of software engineering has transferred the common-sense methods of good programming and management to large software projects. It has been less successful in acquiring a solid theoretical foundation for these methods. The software development process has been divided into phases, each separating from programming some aspect for independent consideration. The division itself has no justification save practice that has evolved for large, concurrently processed programs. Furthermore, each phase needs formal description and analysis. We briefly describes the disciplines, gives its existing theoretical basis, and lists some problems that need theoretical work. Author
