Abstract:

This document rationalizes the need for the use of coherent software development methodologies in conjunction with Ada and its programming support environments APSEs and describes the characteristics that such methodologies should possess. It is recognized that software development, particularly for embedded systems, is increasingly done in the context of overall systems development, including hardware and environmental factors. While there is a strong need for integrated systems engineering, this document focuses on the software issues only. Emphasis is thus given to the process by which software is developed for Ada applications, not just with the language or its automated support environment. The development activity yields a collection of work products including source and object versions of Ada programs. These work products are valuable not only through the development phase, but also through the entire lifetime of the system as modifications and enhancements are made to the system.
