The particular problem examined is the institutionalization of planned organizational change. Institutionalization refers to the process by which planned organizational change is sustained over time. It is analogous to the concept of refreezing in the Lewinian 1951 paradigm of unfreezing, changing, and refreezing, where unfreezing refers to the process by which motivation to change is induced, changing concerns the process by which the individual adopts temporarily new patterns of beliefs, attitudes or behaviors, and refreezing refers to the process by which new behaviors persist over time.
