Abstract:

The initial objective for this effort was to obtain an understanding of the response of ceramic materials on a microstructural level when subjected to water drop impact conditions rain erosion. Before this objective could be satisfied it was necessary to have a well-controlled experimental arrangement so that the observed material damage, especially for very minor surface disruptions, could be related to a well-defined loading condition. A significant portion of the effort was devoted to achieving this test condition.
