Abstract:
An improved spectral model for ocean wave prediction is described. The present model includes an improved representation for weak, nonlinear, wave-wave interactions that depends on spectral shape and prescribes atmospheric input that is consistent with measurements by Snyder et al. The limiting form of the spectrum is defined as a Pierson-Moskowitz spectrum with a variable saturation range parameter. Some additional constraints are also used to obtain stable spectra because there is, in effect, a mismatch between the numerous degrees of freedom of the two-dimensional wave spectrum and the level of sophistication used to represent the physical processes affecting wave growth. The focus of the present note is on the wave model computer program. The note is organized for someone wanting to implement the program. Hence, top-level flow charts, user instructions, and tape output formats are given. In addition, a detailed description of the numerical method is included.
