The present work gives the results of flow visualization studies and six component force measurements on an ogive cylinder body at high angles of attack in the sub and transonic flow regime. High angle of attack aerodynamic investigations had not been done before at the VKI, so a new wind tunnel model support system, six component force balance and water tunnel contraction and test section were designed and constructed to enable the present investigation to be performed. Force measurements and flow visualization studies were carried out on both a sharp nosed body and a blunt nosed body of ldTOT18 and 17.4, respectively. The side force induced by the asymmetric vortex pattern which develops on the leeward side of an ogive cylinder was the primary focus of this investigation. A detailed review of previous investigations was performed. The results obtained in this investigation were found to agree quite well with previous results. The flow visualization studies were carried out in the VKI WT- 1 water tunnel and the force measurements in the VKI S-1 transonic-supersonic wind tunnel.
