Microcode is defined as those instructions residing in either read only or writeable memory that have a one-to-one correspondence to basic operations of hardware elements such as ALUs, multiplexers, selectors, registers, etc. Although the software development process is well understood and appropriate documentation standards exist to monitor the entire life cycle for software, microcode development to date has no such general understanding, nor has a Microcode Documentation Standard yet been established with which to appropriately monitor the microcode life cycle. This report examines the problems associated with the development of microcode and the attendant problem with establishing a general standard for its development. An approach to the development and documentation of microcode is proposed. Author
