Abstract:
The anticyclonic circulation in the western Gulf of Mexico is studied through 6 AXBT flights, 5 cruises, and moored current meter data over the course of a year, as well as through examination of the historical data base. It is concluded that the flow field consists of a background circulation presumably forced by the curl of the wind stress and the presence of warm core rings which periodically pinch off from the Loop Current.
