The aggregation and precipitation processes of divalent cation impurities in alkali halides have been followed by optical spectroscopy as well as ionic thermocurrent methods. In particular, a number of absorption and luminescence bands have been ascribed to well-defined precipitated phases. The influence of these precipitation processes on mechanical yield-stress behavior has been investigated and the different role of stable and metastable phases has been clearly differenciated. Author
