Abstract:

This report describes a new media selection model developed as part of a project aimed at improving procedures available for media selection in connection with U.S. Army training. The model addresses factors of learning effectiveness by means of a flowchart which permits successive exclusion of media from an initial candidate set. Derivation of the model focused particularly upon principles of human learning which affect decisions about media, in particular the nature of instruction. The proposed model is described with consideration of some of the apparent limitations of guidelines for media selection in the Instructional Systems Development ISD model. Difficulties experienced in the use of these guidelines provided a part of the reason for developing the new model. A description is given of the method of use of the new model and its incorporation into the ISD procedure. Benefits that may be derived from use of the model are also indicated. Author
