Abstract:

The electronic and atomic structure of the diamond 111 surface and the effects of hydrogen termination are studied using photoemission, photon stimulated desorption, low energy electron diffraction, and Auger electron spectroscopy. Hydrogen termination results in a 1 x 1 surface with no filled surface states in or near the band gap region. A high temperature anneal approx. 1000 degrees C removes the hydrogen and results in a 2 x 22 x 1 surface structure. Author
