Abstract:
The proposed plan for harbor modification consists of deepening 27-28 feet below Low Water Datum and widening 500 feet of the lake channel and lower river channel of the existing project. It also provides for lengthening the existing channel and for the construction of a turning basin in Lake Erie. The dredged material which is unsuitable for open water disposal would be confined in a crescent shaped disposal facility of approximately 190 acres. A wetland would be created behind the disposal facility by raising the lake bottom with clean fill to approximately Low Water Datum. The deep draft channel would allow larger, more economical vessels into the harbor. The confined disposal facility would protect shore areas from wind and wave attack. The rock-faced disposal facility would create a beneficial habitat for aquatic life. The wetland constructed behind the disposal facility would create feeding and spawning areas for fish, provide nesting, feeding and cover for waterfowl, and provide recreational opportunities for fishermen, hunters and sightseers.
