Abstract:
This project initially establishes that there is a need for an improved system of information handling. This need has evolved from the growth of knowledge, the speed with which information moves, and the pervasive use of the digital computer. Improved information handling is required to provide timely decision-making data, to help maintain a companys competitive position, and to reduce office costs, transmission costs, and travel costs. Past barriers to solutions have included the cost and inadequacy of the available alternatives as well as certain regulatory and financial factors. The technology is now available to provide a means of meeting the needs for improved information handling. In media, this technology is seen in microwave, satellite, and fiber-optic developments which allow for the establishment of both private networks and intelligent networks to serve the user who does not have his own network. The technology has also provided a wide variety of equipment to use in solving information needs, including computers--especially the microprocessor--along with word processors, display terminals, private-branch exchanges, facsimile, high-speed printers, optical-character recognition, and voice-recognition equipment.
