Abstract:
This report presents results from a Naval Research Laboratory-sponsored investigation of dual polarization gyros. The dual polarization concept is a new fiber optic gyro configuration designed to provide independence from principal gyro bias error sources. Experimental results indicate an order of magnitude improvement in bias error performance. Important results from a new modeling capability are also included. In addition to examination of dual polarization gyro performance, a number of fiber gyro configurations have been examined. Results of this effort include development of an improved understanding of fiber optic depolarizers and identification of a previously unreported error team for gyros using 3 dB distributed couplers.
