Abstract:

This report evaluates the adequacy of the control and disposition of collateral under the Small Business Administrations SBAs 7a loan program. Our report suggests ways to reduce loan losses through better management of collateral. The review was made because of our concern with increasing loan losses and the large number of loans in liquidation. Our review was limited to SBA Region III, but we believe the issues identified would be typical of problems found in other SBA regions. The report contains recommendations. Section 236 of the Legislative Reorganization Act of 1970 requires the head of a Federal agency to submit a written statement on actions taken on our recommendations to the House Committee on Government Operations, and the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs not later than 60 days after the date of the report and, to the House and Senate Committees on Appropriations with the agencys first request for appropriations made more than 60 days after the date of the report.
