The Vatterott Lake Dam, which according to the St. Louis District, Corps of Engineers, is of high hazard potential, was visually inspected by engineering personnel. The purpose of this inspection was to assess the general condition of the dam with respect to safety and, based upon this inspection and available data, determine if the dam poses an inordinate danger to human life or property. The following report summarizes the findings of the visual inspection and the results of certain hydrologichydraulic investigations performed under the direction of the inspection team. Based on the visual inspection and the results of these hydrologichydraulic investigations, the present general condition of the dam is considered to be less than satisfactory. Deficiencies observed during the inspection which are considered to have an adverse effect on the overall safety and future operation of the dam include such items as seepage, erosion of the embankment, trees and dense brush on the dam, possible dam settlement, an obstructed spillway approach, a badly eroded spillway outlet channel, and a large marshy area just downstream of the dam that could be detrimental to the stability of the embankment.
