Abstract:

Base functions of various kind can be used for prediction problems. All of them are interrelated to each other. In particular, the family of splines, the Gaussian function, the sin pi xpi x function, the Hirvonen covariance functions, and the Bjerhammar interpolation functions are considered here. Particular emphasis is put on the important role of the correlation length of the base covariance function its strong relations to the data sampling rate and to the maximum prediction error should advantageously be used as a guideline for the design of gravity field data-collection and data-processing programs.
