Abstract:

Theoretical and experimental results are presented which define the strain paths and stress paths experienced by geological material elements in the vicinity of buried explosions. The theoretical strain and stress paths are obtained by finite-difference solution of spherical and cylindrical explosions in an infinite inelastic medium. These calculations are used to define loading and unloading paths in static laboratory tests on Kayenta sandstone. The data thus provide the necessary information for definition of material constitutive models which apply to these specific explosive geometries.
