The University of Washingtons Department of Oceanography has established comprehensive teaching and research programs, which are conducted by a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and support personnel. More than 120 projects comprise our research program, which covers a broad range of oceanographic investigations and has annual expenditures in excess of eight million dollars. These investigations range from individual research projects to multidisciplinary andor multiuniversity projects, such as the Deep Ocean Mining Environmental Study DOMES, the first GARP Global Experiment FGGE, the First International Biomass Experiment FIBEX, the Global Atlantic Tropical Experiment GATE, the International Program of Ocean Drilling IPOD supported by the Deep Sea Drilling Project DSDP, the International Southern Ocean Studies ISOS, the Manganese Nodule Program MANOP, the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program OCSEAP, the Joint U.S.-U.S.S.R. Mid Ocean Dynamics Experiment POLYMODE, the Processes and Resources of the Bering Sea Shelf Program PROBES, the Rivera Ocean Seismic Experiment ROSE, and the proposed Subarctic Pacific Ecosystem Research Program SUPER.
