Under control of a heuristic program, a flying-spot scanner is used to digitize selected portions of a panoramic dental radiograph. These digitized signals are filtered mathematically and the resulting smoothed and enhanced signals are analyzed by feature recognition programs. The outlines of existing teeth are then recreated by the computer and displayed on a graphic display terminal. Author
