Abstract:

This volume is concerned with the Republic of Vietnam RVN, focusing primarily on the society, the government and its armed forces. The long subjugation of the Vietnamese population by the Chinese and the French, and the periods of relative independence, have exerted manifold influences on the society, the government and the military. The chapters of this volume each examine a specific aspect of South Vietnam to provide an understanding of the environment, people, and government and the factors that contributed to the collapse of the Republic. The following topics are examined The societal structure and significant differences between US and Vietnamese societies The governmental structure and USGVN working relationships The influence of geography and climate on the conduct of the war The South Vietnamese economy and the impact of US aid and physical presence on that economy The development and performance of the South Vietnamese armed forces and their leadership The morale and will of the South Vietnamese people and the influence of the American presence and The domestic and international constraints on GVN policy.
