For the purpose of accurately estimating linear elastic fracture parameters by finite element method, the use of Reissners variational principle as a basis is investigated. Results of two-dimensional analyses performed on three-point bend, compact tension, and ring tension geometries compare well with other solutions available in the literature. Results of three-dimensional analyses of three-point bend and ring geometries are also presented. The method appears to be particularly useful in studying through the thickness variation or Mode I stress intensity factors. Author
