This report provides a scoping analysis on phenomena and effects of nuclear detonations at sea. It provides, with the use of example calculations, estimates of the short- and long-term radiological impacts on the ocean environment. The example calculated results showed that the radiation rates in the sea at early times, out to distances beyond severe vessel damage, are sufficiently high to warrant concern however, because of radioactive decay and diffusive expansion, the radioactivity is reduced to negligible hazard levels within about one to two days.
