An Assessment of Team Development at the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory.

The basic question answered by this research was Has the team building organizational development OD intervention at the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory AFFDL had any measurable effect on the various organizational goals that were stated for the program Effectiveness was determined via a longitudinal analysis of the change from 1978 to 1980 on eleven criterion variables employee job satisfaction, job motivation and absenteeism five organizational climate factors and three productivity factors scientists and engineers only. A questionnaire was utilized in 1978, 1979, and 1980 to obtain data on all variables except absenteeism. Absenteeism data were obtained from AFFDL internal records. The four main product divisions of AFFDL served as subjects for this research. Since the OD program was voluntary, two divisions elected to participate while two did not. This created the natural control group--treatment group situation utilized in this research. The results of the data analysis showed that OD treatment divisions failed to exhibit any statistically significant change on any of the eleven criterion variables from 1978 to 1980. Despite having been underway for over four years, the AFFDL program has had no lasting measurable positive effect on the stated program goals. Author
