The purpose of this paper is to analyze just what has taken place in the critical Sino-Soviet relationship since Maos death. In the context of the inevitable questions regarding relations between Peking and Moscow, what have the first eight months or so of the post-Mao era suggested in the way of answers. It is hoped that a probing of the historical record of this brief period will aid in at least tentatively ascertaining the motivations propelling the two sides to their various policies, the factors which have determined the success and failure of each, and what the future trend of relations is likely to be.
