As part of the overall research program aimed at an investigation of the hardness, friction and wear behaviour of SiC and Si3N4 engineering ceramics as a function of load, temperature and environment, the microhardness and indentation fracture response of various forms of SiC 1 and one form of Si3N4 have been studied using both Vickers and Knoop indentation techniques at temperatures ranging from 20-800 degrees C and at applied loads of between 0.1 and 1kgf, in vacuo.
