Abstract:
During the course of a Phase 1 archaeological reconnaissance of the Batavia Reservoir Compound area, twenty-three new archaeological sites were recorded. Of these, seventeen were prehistoric sites and six were historic foundations. Intensive Phase 2 investigation will be required for nine of the prehistoric sites. Less intensive Phase II investigation will be required for six of the prehistoric sites. All six historic sites will require limited subsurface testing, measurement, precise mapping and deed searches. Of the entire project area, 39 was intensively sampled by either systematic surface survey or shovel testing 31 was walked over 30 was either open water or swamp.
