Abstract:

There are changing values, roles, and attitudes in todays family structures. The traditional family model of the working husband and the dependent wife is giving way to the non-traditional family models. One of the emerging non-traditional family models is that of the single parent family. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the single parent family. Included is a brief background concerning the various causes of single parenthood. The general responsibilities and needs of the single parent are covered, along with the unique responsibilities of the military single parent. The final areas looked at are the various policies concerning the single parent and how they could effect force manning and readiness. It is found that the single parents greatest problem revolves around the issue of child care for working hours and periods away from home. It is concluded that if the single parent family can be assisted with the responsibilities to the family, the service member can devote more energy to the mission of the military. Author
