Abstract:
The means residual life mrl function epsilon sub Fx gives the expected remaining life of a patient at age x, where the underlying failure distribution is F. Reliabilists and biometricians have found it useful to categorize failure distributions by monotonicity properties of the mrl. In particular F is said to be a decreasing mean residual life dmrl distribution if epsilon sub F0 is finite and for all 0 less than or t, epsilon sub Fs less than or epsilon sub Ft. If the preceding inequality is reversed, F is said to be an increasing mean residual life imrl distribution.
