A Survey of Glutamine Synthetase Activities in Tissues from Three Classes of Fish.

Enzyme assays using the gamma-glutamyl transferase method provided estimates of glutamine synthetase activity in tissues from 18 species of fish. These species included Chinook salmon, Pacific herring, carp, channel catfish, Pacific hagfish, ratfish, spiny dogfish, copper rockfish, Pacific cod, fresh-water and salt-water stingray, and Pacific lamprey. Glutamine synthetase activity in liver and kidney from the classes Chondrichthyes, Cyclostomi and Osteichthyes related to each species need for glutamine. Brain activity was relatively high in all species. Gill and other tissues had very low but detectable glutamine synthetase activity. Author
