The Application of Integrated Optics to Computing.

Recent developments in bistable optical devices and residue arithmetic processing have shown there is a significant potential application of optics to computing. The ability to perform these functions using integrated optics provides the capability for providing a high device density and enhances the application to computing. An introduction to bistable optical devices and residue arithmetic is provided and the fundamental limit to optical computing set by thermal problems is addressed. It is concluded that the limits previously proposed are not applicable and thermal loss can potentially be very low. Author
