Abstract:

Seven different paint systems were formulated to meet military specifications of paints used by the Navy. These included three vinyl resins, two polyurethanes, and two epoxy resin systems. Unpigmented free films of all of these systems were prepared for various physical and chemical measurements. Chemical formulas, molecular weights, and structures of these resins are known. Three characterization tests were used, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy and dynamic mechanical properties measured on a Rheovibron instrument. The loss tangent for all of the systems rapidly increased around or slightly above room temperature. The nonlinear changes in mechanical properties around and above room temperature are indicative of structural changes that would certainly influence mass transport properties of the films.
