High performance liquid chromatography HPLC is a versatile analytical technique for the separation and detection of components in complex chemical mixtures. HPLC test methods are developed to fingerprint the chemical compositions and to quantitatively analyze specific components in hydraulic fluids. Petroleum-base and synthetic hydrocarbon-base hydraulic fluids conforming to existing Military Specifications and used by the U.S. Army Materiel Development and Readiness Command are considered in this report. Detailed methods and test procedures are developed for the analysis of a MIL-H-6083D hydraulic fluid. The precision and accuracy of each method is evaluated. Suggestions are made regarding the implementation of the methods in Military Specifications, in field testing, and in the development of hydraulic fluids. Author
