Abstract:

The Hugoniot of 4340 steel of Rockwell C hardness 54-55 has been measured. The alpha or b.c.c. phase Hugoniot can be represented by the equation U 4.67 1.44 u where U is the wave velocity and u is the particle velocity in kms. The Hugoniot of the epsilon or h.c.p. phase above the 13GPa transition point is close to that of rolled homogeneous armor.
