Abstract:

Several welding processes were used to deposit weld metal into full penetration joints in standard armor. The optimum process, or combination thereof, determined by results of ballistic firing tests, was used to join armors of different types and hardnesses. The types of armors were 1 standard, 2 High hardness, and 3 ESR. The combinations used were standard to high hardness, standard to ESR, and ESR to high hardness. A mock hull was fabricated of these three armors to determine their compatibility in a single structure. Radiography revealed the hull to be free of flaws.
