Abstract:

Cherrystone Creek Dam No. 1 is a zoned earthfill structure about 790 ft long and 57 ft high. The principal spillway consists of a 42 inch prestressed cylinder concrete pipe which extends through the structure. Water is discharged into the principal spillway through a reinforced concrete riser and is expelled into a reinforced concrete impact basin. The emergency spillway is a 135 ft wide vegetated earth channel. The dam is located on Cherrystone Creek about 2.5 miles northwest of Chatham, Virginia and was constructed for flood control and recreation. The dam is of intermediate size and has been assigned a significant hazard classification. The appropriate spillway design flood is the 12 Probable Maximum Flood 12 PMF. The emergency spillway will pass 80 percent of the PMF prior to overtopping. Based on criteria established by the Department of the Army, Office of the Chief of Engineers OCE, the spillway is rated adequate.
