Abstract:

Comprehensive teaching and research programs are conducted at the Department of Oceanography, University of Washington, by a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and support personnel. The research program is presently comprised of more than 150 projects covering a broad range of oceanographic investigations and has annual expenditures in excess of six million dollars. These investigations range from one-person individual research projects to participation in multidisciplinary, multiuniversity projects, such as the Coastal Upwelling Ecosystems Analysis program CUEA, the Deep Ocean Mining Environmental Study DOMES, the Global Atlantic Tropical Experiment GATE, the International Program of Ocean Drilling IPOD supported by the Deep Sea Drilling Project DSDP, the International Southern Ocean Studies ISOS, the Manganese Nodule Program MANOP the Outer Continental Shelf Environmental Assessment Program OCSEAP, the Joint U.S.-U.S.S.R. Mid Ocean Dynamic Experiment POLYMODE, the Processes and Resources of the Bering Sea Shelf program PROBES, and the Rivera Ocean Seismic Experiment ROSE.
