A sealing device utilizing water ice to form a very close-fitting liquid water capillary seal about a rotating shaft has been designed, built, and tested. The experimental shaft diameter was 6 in. 15.24 cm and it rotated at 600 rpm. The observed leakage rates were below 0.05 cu insec 0.8 cu cms for differential pressures up to 600 psi 4150 kPa. The maximum power required to drive the shaft was less than 500 W. A set of basic equations was developed to predict the seal performance. Experimental results indicate the basic equations are sufficiently accurate for future seal designs. Author
