Abstract:

The cellulolytic potential of Thermomonospora curvata, a thermophilic actinomycete isolated from municipal solid waste compost, was evaluated. Studies on induction and repression of cellulase synthesis revealed that lactose, a potent inducer in Trichoderma, is a repressor in T. curvata, whereas cellobiose acts as inducer. Cellulase production is greatly influenced by Ca concentration and completely inhibited by low levels of pyridinium herbicides. T. curvata rapidly degrades a wide variety of solid waste cellulosic materials including some types of coated wrapping materials. Author
