Abstract:

When atomic or molecular cross sections are measured by electron- or molecular-beam techniques, the energy spread of the beam is responsible for the measurement to be related to an energy averaged cross section rather than the true cross section. These two cross sections are related by an integral equation involving the energy distribution of the beam. A new numerical technique is presented that facilitates the solution of the integral equation such that the effects of experimental scatter on the stability and accuracy of the solution are significantly reduced. An exact analytical solution is also derived for the case of a truncated Maxwellian energy distribution with constant beam temperature. Author
