Abstract:

The aims and objectives of this report were to collect and assimilate information and synthesize data on the effects of atmospheric obstructions to visibility for the non-specialist. The following areas were addressed A general discussion of the visible wavelengths, overall electromagnetic spectrum, radiometric and photometric quantities and concepts, and other visibility parameters The human eye, nature of visibility, and the atmospheric effects on detection ranges A description of those obstructions to visibility as listed in the Federal Meteorological Handbook on surface observations A description of the primary visual instruments The practicality of developing techniques that could be used to determine the effects of atmospheric obstructions on visibility and some typical charts and graphs and A summary of the extensive literature search performed.
